The International and Comparative Law Review (ICLR) was founded by Victor M. Marroquin and first published in 1991 in English, French, and Spanish. Victor was joined by four other founding members, Jill Anderson, Michael Johnson, Kevin Roberts, and Alex Palenzuela, who all shared Victor’s vision for a new, more globally focused publication. Victor’s mission stated: “We wanted to create an original publication, a journal that would serve not only as a forum for the discussion and development of international law in the English speaking world, but also as a tool of research and practice for English as well as non-English reading international lawyers and scholars.” Today, the members of ICLR strive to embody those same principles.
Our History
The review first operated and published as the University of Miami Yearbook of International Law, following the European style of publications, but changed its name to the University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review to avoid confusion and allow for biannual publication. The scope of topics encompassed by the law review was also expanded by the addition of “comparative” to the previously solely international title. Today, the review publishes articles that cover a myriad of international and comparative topics and has opined on the legal issues of countries from all corners of the world.
Some of the prominent authors that have been published in ICLR include our founder, Victor M. Marroquin, as well as Francisco Garcia-Amador, Sir Robert Jennings, Jose Daniel Amado, Patrick Macrory, and Edwin Vermulst, among many others.
ICLR now publishes twice a year, generally with five to six scholarly articles in each issue. Both students and professionals are given the opportunity to be published in ICLR. Jaeline Figueroa, Editor-in-Chief
Jaelin is a third-year law student of Ecuadorian and Puerto Rican descent. Aside from her role in ICLR, she is a member of Honor Council, Miami Law Women, and First-Generation Law Association. Prior to law school, she obtained her Bachelor of Science from the University of Florida in psychology. This past summer, she worked at Winderweedle, Haines, Ward, and Woodman in Orlando, Florida, where she worked on on real estate, bankruptcy, and general business matters. While in law school she has also worked from Lydecker LLP.
Arianna Amato , Managing Editor
Born and raised in New Jersey, Arianna (Ari) Amato is a rising third-year student excited to serve as ICLR’s Managing Editor. She attended the University of Miami for her undergraduate career, where she pursued a major in Legal Studies and minors in History, Political Science, and Sports Administration. After graduating from UM in May 2022, Ari worked as a judicial intern for the Honorable Esther Salas for the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey. During her time in law school thus far, Ari has completed externships with Bacardi, Miami Hurricanes Athletics, and the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida. She is also an active executive board member in various student organizations like First Generation Law Association and Miami Law’s Chapter of the Cuban American Bar Association. This summer, she worked as a Summer Associate for Cole Scott & Kissane in their Tampa office. In her free time, she enjoys trying new recipes, relaxing on the beach with friends, and keeping up with Miami and New York Sports.
Gabriela Ibáñez , Executive Editor
Gabriela Ibáñez is a third year law student at the University of Miami School of Law, with an interest in international law and commercial litigation. Prior to pursuing her legal career, Gabriela graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from Florida International University. Gabriela’s multicultural upbringing fueled her commitment to promoting the success of Hispanic law students. She is currently the President of the Hispanic Law Students Association, where she passionately advocates for inclusivity and fosters a supportive environment for her peers. In her professional pursuits, Gabriela interns for State Farm’s in-house counsel department, assisting in litigation for personal injury protection claims. Her prior experiences include an externship at the U.S. Coast Guard Judge Advocate General’s office, providing support in matters concerning international and maritime law. Moreover, during her 1L summer she interned at Deloitte’s Office of the General Counsel, conducting legal research on diverse legal topics, including M&A, Labor and Employment, and Commercial Litigation. Before law school, Gabriela was a real estate paralegal for five years at a boutique law firm in North Bay Village, FL.
Mica Karanovic, Executive Editor
My name is Mica Karanovic and I’m a 3L pursuing my J.D. and LL.M. in Taxation. This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to work as a tax intern at KPMG Chicago in the Mergers and Acquisitions group. I’m excited to share that I’ve accepted an offer to return to KPMG as an associate after graduation. I joined ICLR because of my strong interest in international issues, especially cross-border transactions. I look forward to another year of exploring prominent global matters and working with a great team.

Alex Llanos, Events and Symposium Editor
Alex Llanos is a rising 3L at the University of Miami School of Law and a Fellow for UM’s Investor Rights Clinic. Last summer, Alex worked on Capitol Hill and assisted on matters with the Appropriations Committee and the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government. This summer, he worked at a boutique firm and gained experience in securities class actions and SEC Whistleblower filings. In his free time, Alex enjoys going to the movies, competing in fencing tournaments, and spending time with his husky, Fane.

Born and raised in Miami, Florida, Michael is a third-year law student serving as the ICLR Alumni Editor. He graduated cum laude from the University of Miami with a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering. This past summer Michael served as a law clerk for Cole, Scott, & Kissane in the Construction Litigation Group.
Emily Gross, Online Editor
Originally from Miami, Florida, Emily Gross is a third-year law student and currently serves as the Online Editor for the International and Comparative Law Review. She graduated from Florida State University in 2019 with a degree in Media and Communications. Before starting law school, Emily gained experience in legal marketing at a local law firm. This past summer, she worked at a small firm focusing on Real Estate law. In her free time, Emily enjoys baking and listening to podcasts.

My name is Alyssa Huffman, and I’m excited to be one of ICLR’s Senior Notes and Comments Editors for the 2024-25 school year! This past summer, I worked at Earthjustice’s Florida Regional Office where I got to work on cases involving energy law and various other environmental matters. I joined ICLR to continue exploring my interest in international environmental law, and I look forward to a great year!

Nathalie is a third-year law student serving as one of ICLR’s Senior Notes & Comments Editors. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Southern California, where she majored in Law, History, and Culture. Nathalie is pursuing a joint J.D./LL.M. in Entertainment, Arts, and Sports Law with a focus on Sports Law. Nathalie joined ICLR due to her interest in international law. My name is Asia Ifill. I am originally from Trinidad and Tobago. I will be one of the senior articles and comments editor for the upcoming year. This summer I worked at Kurzban Kurzban Tetzeli & Pratt doing plaintiffs work in medical malpractice. My experience showed me how the legal profession can hold medical institutions accountable for breaches in the standard of patient care. I joined ICLR because I wanted to refine my writing and fact-checking skills. My work this summer showed me that law review is one of the most useful parts of my law school experience.

Hi Everyone! My name is John Dennis. This past summer, I was a summer law clerk at Lewis, Longman & Walker, P.A. in West Palm Beach, FL. As a summer law clerk, I had the opportunity to work on various matters related to environmental issues, property disputes, local government developments, and agreement revisions. I joined the International and Comparative Law Review because I wanted to gain an international perspective on important and insightful legal issues, improve my bluebooking skills, and be a part of a close-knit community of law students that support and welcome each other.
